The Building and Construction Technology Program at the University of Massachusetts is seeking applications for a 12 month Post-Doc position involving research into development of Cross Laminated Timber panels and other engineered wood products. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering, Wood Science, Construction Technology, or a closely related field with strong woodshop skills and structural wood testing knowledge. Experience in heavy timber structural design and/or computational analysis is also an asset.

Two positions for research associate / PhD student working on the “Biohome” subsahara project.

The BioHome project at Universität Hamburg is part of the program "Partnerships for Sustainable Solutions with Sub-Saharan Africa: Measures for Research and Integrated postgraduate training and continuing training". It is funded by the BMBF (German Ministry of Education and Research). BioHome aims to combine secondary resources with lignocellulosic feed-stocks to produce valuable composite materials.

North Carolina State University's Department of Forest Biomaterials is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Wood Products Extension and academic (teaching and research) faculty position (Assistant Professor). The preferred candidate will have knowledge/skills/industrial experience in one or more of the following areas related to Wood Products and similar fields:
• Innovative techniques and methods for recycling wood-based materials;
• Markets for the recycling and/or reuse of wood products;
• Housing and/or wood product construction;
• Renewable/sustainable materials or green building technology;
• New building techniques and designs to facilitate deconstruction.

Research Associate Centre for Natural Material Innovation, Department of Architecture (University of Cambridge) is currently seeking a person with expertise in timber and timber engineering, to work on the application of natural materials to large scale buildings. Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects.

 The InnoRenew CoE is hiring a civil or structural engineer with optimisation programming experience.

The emphasis of this position is on the development of procedures and code for optimization of hybrid, modular buildings with emphasis on various criteria such as modularity, mass, energy ef ciency, construction speed and costs, and sustainability. The Laboratory of Renewable Nanomaterials (LRN) at the School of Forest Resources, University of Maine is seeking Graduate applicants to fill a newly funded graduate research position. The project will be focused on the production and property assessment of a novel hybrid panel made with wood particles, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and a fungal resin.

The successful applicant will provide support to a number of projects within the Tree and Wood Properties research programme. This mainly involves the careful preparing and measurement of wood samples according to agreed protocols, with some collation of data and reporting to colleagues as required. Liaison with other researchers and practitioners in the forestry and wood-using sectors may be necessary.

The Wood Physics Lab at the UBC-Department of Wood Science is seeking a highly qualified person to enter PhD studies in the area of wood physics.

The project will focus on wood cell-wall nano-architecture (polymer self-assembly into complex porous structures) modeling via a scale-up strategy from the submicroscopic level for a better understanding of water sorption and diffusion behaviour. Reverse engineering of cell-wall nano-porosity from sorption characteristics of gross wood will also be included in the research.

The successful candidate should have a BSc and MSc degree in wood science/physics, polymer science/physics, material/chemical engineering or related field with experience in mathematical modeling, molecular simulation, fractal analysis and neural network modeling (if not, willing to learn), and complex experimental design, amongst others.

The successful candidate is expected to begin PhD studies in either January 2017 or May 2017 and quite possibly take a series of advanced courses before commencing significant experimentation.

The School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine is seeking applicants for a one-year postdoctoral Research Associate Position to work on a recently funded project to develop fire resistant adhesive-free fiberboard panels made with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) made from whole wood.

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer, Wood, Materials Science or related engineering discipline required.

The Department of Wood Science & Engineering (WSE), Oregon State University (OSU) is seeking MS or PhD candidates with an interest in applications to timber building design and monitoring.

Research projects will involve both timber engineering, wood science and architectural design.

OSU is located in Corvallis, a vibrant college town in the heart of western Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

The WSE is one of the departments in the College of Forestry.
The College of Forestry is developing a National Center of Excellence for Advanced Wood Products Manufacturing and Design in collaboration with the OSU College of Engineering and the University of Oregon’s School of Architecture and Allied Arts.

FastForests is a multidisciplinary collaboration between UCD and NUI Galway in Ireland and several other institutions based in France and Germany. The research in Ireland is being funded from 2014-2017 by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM).

Two Masters projects will be funded as part of this research, as follows:

MSc 1. The potential impact of forest intensification on the quality of timber and its end use.
MSc 2.The potential impact of forest intensification on forest productivity and wood mobilisation under different climate change scenarios.

Closing date: These positions will remain open until filled.

The PhD project will be a collaborative study between UCD and Teagasc. The objective of the study is to investigate how different tree species grow and utilise growing space.
Applications are sought from highly motivated individuals who have an excellent academic record (preferably a first class primary degree or equivalent) at undergraduate level. A relevant Master’s degree would be an advantage. Primary and postgraduate level degrees should be in forestry, or in the related biological sciences (e.g. agronomy, horticulture, plant physiology etc.).
