Open PostDoc Position at UMass Amhert

The Building and Construction Technology Program at the University of Massachusetts is seeking applications for a 12 month Post-Doc position involving research into development of Cross Laminated Timber panels and other engineered wood products. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering, Wood Science, Construction Technology, or a closely related field with strong woodshop skills and structural wood testing knowledge. Experience in heavy timber structural design and/or computational analysis is also an asset.

North Carolina State University's Department of Forest Biomaterials is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Wood Products Extension and academic (teaching and research) faculty position (Assistant Professor). The preferred candidate will have knowledge/skills/industrial experience in one or more of the following areas related to Wood Products and similar fields:
• Innovative techniques and methods for recycling wood-based materials;
• Markets for the recycling and/or reuse of wood products;
• Housing and/or wood product construction;
• Renewable/sustainable materials or green building technology;

PhD position at Wood Physics Lab at the UBC-Department of Wood Science (Canada)

The Wood Physics Lab at the UBC-Department of Wood Science is seeking a highly qualified person to enter PhD studies in the area of wood physics.

The project will focus on wood cell-wall nano-architecture (polymer self-assembly into complex porous structures) modeling via a scale-up strategy from the submicroscopic level for a better understanding of water sorption and diffusion behaviour. Reverse engineering of cell-wall nano-porosity from sorption characteristics of gross wood will also be included in the research.

The successful candidate should have a BSc and MSc degree in wood science/physics, polymer science/physics, material/chemical engineering or related field with experience in mathematical modeling, molecular simulation, fractal analysis and neural network modeling (if not, willing to learn), and complex experimental design, amongst others.

The successful candidate is expected to begin PhD studies in either January 2017 or May 2017 and quite possibly take a series of advanced courses before commencing significant experimentation.

Interested persons should submit a copy of their CV, an unofficial set of BSc and MSc transcripts and a letter explaining why they should be considered for the position. Please emphasize in your letter, your relevant qualifications to carry out the proposed research work.

Open position for a Graduate Research Assistantship at the Oregon State University (OSU)

The Department of Wood Science & Engineering (WSE), Oregon State University (OSU) is seeking MS or PhD candidates with an interest in applications to timber building design and monitoring.

Research projects will involve both timber engineering, wood science and architectural design.

OSU is located in Corvallis, a vibrant college town in the heart of western Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

The WSE is one of the departments in the College of Forestry.
The College of Forestry is developing a National Center of Excellence for Advanced Wood Products Manufacturing and Design in collaboration with the OSU College of Engineering and the University of Oregon’s School of Architecture and Allied Arts.

Two Masters Scholarships funded as part of FastForest project - University College Dublin,

FastForests is a multidisciplinary collaboration between UCD and NUI Galway in Ireland and several other institutions based in France and Germany. The research in Ireland is being funded from 2014-2017 by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM).

Two Masters projects will be funded as part of this research, as follows:

MSc 1. The potential impact of forest intensification on the quality of timber and its end use.
MSc 2.The potential impact of forest intensification on forest productivity and wood mobilisation under different climate change scenarios.

PhD position available on ShortFor Project – Biomass and Renewable Energy from Short Rotation Forest

The PhD project will be a collaborative study between UCD and Teagasc. The objective of the study is to investigate how different tree species grow and utilise growing space.
Applications are sought from highly motivated individuals who have an excellent academic record (preferably a first class primary degree or equivalent) at undergraduate level. A relevant Master’s degree would be an advantage. Primary and postgraduate level degrees should be in forestry, or in the related biological sciences (e.g. agronomy, horticulture, plant physiology etc.).
